I had sooooo been looking forward to this part of the trip and had been dosing up on antihistamines for the previous 3 days hoping that my allergy to horses wasn’t going to spoil the whole stay!! And it didn’t - eating tablets for breakfast, lunch and dinner and constantly filling my nose with nasal spray seemed to do the trick. I only had a few sneezes and a bit of a rash that cleared up quickly!!
So we started of with a chill out day when we arrived mid afternoon. We just unpacked our stuff, sorted out some washing and chilled out in the garden soaking up the sun and admiring the scenery. In front of us there was some beautiful horses with their new born foals as well as cows, chickens, guinea foul, a cat, 2 dogs and lots of flies!! As far as the eye could see was part of the 6000 acre ranch and it was lush and green and kind of looked like home!! What a place to chill out for 3 days :o)
Later on in the evening the owner, Kevin, invited us up to their BBQ area for some dinner and wine. It was so nice not to be cooking our own food and to be having some nice Argentinean steak!!
Wohoooooo Day 2 we get to ride the horses…we wake up and its chucking it down with rain :o( Oh well a few extra layers of clothing, our rain jackets and the rain will probably actually be good for the allergy as at least all of the horse hair will be kept down!! We were introduced to our horses, mine was Rosieta a gorgeous brown horse with a few grey hairs in her mane (just like my own!!) and Toms was Casatonia (he thinks!!) a huge chesnut brown stallion. All of the horses looked so fit and healthy and were so well trained. It was nice to know that they were well looked after as we have seen so many skinny horses on our way down through South America!! The riding was fantastic and the ranch was beautiful. We rode up to some beautiful waterfalls.
Day 3 - Yay the sun has come out!! Today was totally different we were in t-shirts and had the sun cream out and couldn’t wait to get back on the horses. We took the horses up to the top of the ranch which had a beautiful view of the lake in the nearby town they called it ‘the top of the world’ at the ranch. To be honest just riding around the sun on horseback and chatting to everyone was so nice. In the afternoon we rode down to the Gauchos cattle pen and tried our hands at lassoing!! I was first to get my rope around the practice pole in the centre of the pen but off course Tom had to out do me by lassoing not one but two unsuspecting cute little calves!! The poor things but the gauchos were very impressed with him!!
We got back, cleaned up and went for some wine and cheese tasting with Kevin!! The wines were gorgeous even though im not really a big wine fan. They were a selection of Malbec’s, Cabernet Sauvignon’s and Dessert wines from a local vine yard and were labelled especially for the estancia with their crest. We bought a couple of bottles as the money spent was donated to a local school that was funded by the estancia and all of us left behind anything from our rucksacks that we didn’t need!!
So that was the end of our three days in paradise - I didn’t want to leave and hopefully I’ve convinced Tom to buy me an Argentinian stallion and ship at home at a small cost of around $15,000 as a companion for Toms dad who will look after it well, im sure, whilst I just ride it!! I mean I’m worth it and it is Valentines day soon!!!!!!!!!!
